TSCD529 Track List

The Wind in the Reed

The Northumbrian Small Pipes have existed since at least the 17th Century, if not earlier - an instrument unique to the North East of England with its own special sound. This record traces the history of the instrument's music.
The early tunes had to fit within the limited confines of the first instruments' range, but, necessity being the mother of invention, this produced tunes that may have been limited in tonal range but were certainly not at all limited in melodic invention. In time the instrument developed, enabling more complex tunes with greater range to pass into the tradition. This recording features the whole range of sound and repertoire from solos to full band arrangements, from some of the finest players.

Jim Hallsmall pipes, piano, Anthony Robb small pipes, Carole Robb small pipes, flute, Colin Ross small pipes, fiddle, viola, Alistair Anderson English concertina, small pipes.

English & Scottish Ballads (see track list for artistes names)

The folk ballad,' wrote A.L.Lloyd, 'is a folk tale put into verse and set to music. Among British ballads are some of the oldest as well as greatest folksongs we have.' His claim is trenchantly justified by this exceptional collection, as dramas of the distant past are restaged in vibrant performances by Ewan MacColl, Anne Briggs, Louis Killen, Mike Waterson, Norman Kennedy and Lloyd himself.
